Online CBT

This online CBT offering is a stand alone program for those that are not able to attend our CBT certificate in person in Toronto.

CBT for Clinical Practitioners is an online platform for learning the skills of the cognitive-behavioural modality. Though Canadian in origin, it is comprehensive in nature, and designed with a broad audience of students in mind, both culturally and with regard to practice diversity. Please note that oral and written fluency in English is required.

CBT for Clinical Practitioners will introduce the student to the full set of interventions of the cognitive-behavioural approach, setting a solid foundation for practice. Students may choose to end their training after the beginner level, or progress on to any of the three applications of Intermediate Practice (students may take as many as they wish). Advanced Practice helps the student progress from practitioner status to that of clinical supervisor, with all the roles and obligations therein. Note: equivalency for prerequisites is approved on a case-by-case nature. Each level will leave the student with both a strong philosophical start, as well as a starter toolkit of worksheets that can be duplicated to support their practice.

Once payment is received, the student will receive a license key within one week, and can begin course whenever they wish. Each level will require the student to complete a set of 8 modules that will take about 3 hours each. Modules do not have to be done in one sitting, as they are self-directed. The student may progress through the course as quickly or as slowly they wish, though all eight modules must be completed within a maximum of six months. Modules are varied and made up of lectures, viewings, demos, supplemental readings, professional and reflective practice exercises. There are no tests or exams.

Assignments and Textbooks

Assignments are submitted through the online platform. Once all assignments have been submitted, it will take approximately 2-6 weeks to review and return materials. The student will receive their certificate of completion from Adler once this step is complete. Courses will draw from no more than two textbooks per course (texts have been kept under $100 USD per course); students will require these before they begin, and will not be able to complete assignments without them.

Course Descriptions

Beginning Practice: Cognitive Behavioural Foundations

$695 + textbooks

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy was first used during the 1950’s and 1960’s, pioneered by American Psychiatrist Dr. Aaron Beck. Its’ first application was with hospital in-patients experiencing clinical depression. But as the decades passed, the interventions Dr. Beck used began to undergo the structuring it required to be used with more people in many other situations. Eventually, CBT made its way out of inpatient units and into the global population at large. This course is a vibrant introduction to the foundations of cognitive behavioural practice. Designed with the cultural and contextual implications of a wide variety of students in mind, students will leave with the basic practical techniques required to begin practice, including a coursepack of 20 interventions that can be duplicated for practice.

Intermediate Practice: CBT Applications

Application A: CBT with Mental Health & Addiction

$695 + textbooks

For reasons that are many, the incidence of almost every mental health disorder is rising quickly. The World Health Organization has predicted that clinical depression alone will be a leading cause of workplace disability worldwide by 2020, second only to ischemic heart disease. Suited for those in clinical practice with adult mental health disorders, this level will apply the interventions of CBT to the most commonly seen DSM-5 disorders in everyday practice, including depression, anxiety and single episode trauma. Students will leave with treatment summaries for each disorder (the “coursepack”) that they can apply to practice right away.

Application B: Advanced CBT with Complex Mental Health

$695 + textbooks

Practitioners will routinely find themselves challenged by cases that are more complicated in nature. These challenges might occur because the symptom list is confounding, because there is more than one diagnosis, or because the presenting issue is complicated in origin. Topics covered in this course include personality disorder, psychosis, schizophrenia, and complex trauma. This course will also assist practitioners in learning to think critically about the nature of the mental health “epidemic” and how to be a change agent within it. Students will leave with treatment summaries (the “coursepack”) for each disorder that they can apply to practice right away.

Application C: CBT with Families: Couples, Kids and Youth - $695 + textbooks

$695 + textbooks

As one part of a family system encounters change, the whole unit must adjust. This course looks at how to apply the cognitive-behavioural model to work with couples, children and youth. Looking closely at common, contemporary issues that present to the therapy room, students will leave with an understanding of how to apply the skills learned in level 1 in creative and concrete ways to couples, children (4-7 year olds, 8-12 year olds), and adolescents 12-18). Students will leave with a robust toolkit (the “coursepack”) that includes worksheets that can be used in session, formatted to couples, kids and youth.

Advanced Practice: CBT Supervisor Training

$750 + textbook

Watkins et. al. has said “we would never dream of turning untrained therapists loose on needy patients, so why would we turn untrained supervisors loose on therapists who help those needy patients?” The need for quality supervision and oversight of CBT practice has become a large demand in many contexts. This course will introduce emerging supervisors to methods, practices and metrics that guide the supervision pathway in the CBT context. Students will learn concepts that must guide the supervision relationship, evidence-based measures for evaluation, and common themes that emerge during clinical supervision. A live 1:1 grading and review of the students’ supervision tape with an experienced supervisor will be required of each student.

CBT For Educators

$695 + textbooks

Available Online January 7, 2019

The emotional and psychological health of students today is becoming increasingly complex, taxing teachers and their classrooms. For many educators today, attending to the psychological mindset of the student is playing a larger and larger role, despite the fact that many educators have had no training in how to do so. To assist them, this course is written for both child and adult educators that wish to be able to address these realities with students today. Written for teachers, guidance counsellors, coaches and principals, students of this course will leave supported by two coursepacks of worksheets (one for child and youth students, and one for adult learners). Educators will leave the course having learned:

  • how to think about students behaviours in a way that explains a whole picture of the self, including situations, thoughts, moods, behaviour and physical sensations

  • How to use a specific form of conversation with students so that both insight and motivation are effectively increased

  • how to use the worksheets, knowns as "the interventions," to actually do the work of teaching basic but important psychological skills to students

  • tricks and tips for how to address a variety of stuck points and frustrations that may present as students learn psychological skills
