Credit Transfers and Waivers

Where degree or graduate certificate students believe course material may have been covered in prior educational experiences, they may apply to have previous credit transferred into their Program or have a required course or courses waived.

Requests for transfers or waivers will not be considered before a student has signed and returned a Registration Agreement to the School.

For the Master of Psychology program, no more than one-third of the required credits (25 credits) may be transferred. For the Doctor of Psychology, no more than 9 credits may be transferred.

In no case shall:

  • Credits be transferred that are below the degree level of the program for which a transfer is being requested.
  • Credits lower than a grade of 3.0 (B) be transferred or waived.
  • The transferred credits reduce the Residency Requirement for any program (see Residency Requirement for each program).
  • Credits for elective credit or practicum hours be transferred.

Transfer of Credit

  • Transfer of credit reduces the number of remaining credits required for completion of the degree or certificate.

*Fees for transferring credits may apply. See the Tuition & Fees section for applicable fees.

Waiver

  • A waiver allows a student to substitute another course for one required in the degree or certificate without reducing the number of credits required for the degree.

Written requests for transfers or waivers should be directed to the Registrar of the Program in which the student is enrolled and should include a letter referring to a transcript on file with the ADLER Registrar. This should indicate the course or courses being proposed as equivalent to degree or graduate certificate courses, along with a detailed copy of the course outline or syllabus on which the request is based.

The Faculty Dean will consult with the instructor(s) for the proposed ADLER course(s) to ensure that the requested transfer is substantially equivalent to the required course(s). For psychology students, it is a principal criterion that only psychology courses or credits offered by a graduate program that is identified as primarily psychological in nature may be considered equivalent to required courses. Credit equivalency is determined by the number of classroom hours of the course being transferred into the ADLER program (12 classroom hours equal one credit). The Faculty Dean retains final authority for granting transfers and waivers.

After consultation with an advisor or the Dean, the student should direct written requests for transfer of credit or waivers to the Dean for the Faculty of Psychology. Include a letter indicating the course or courses for which you are requesting transfers or waivers, along with a detailed copy of the course syllabus on which the request is based. The Faculty Dean retains final authority for granting credit transfers or waivers.

Transferring from Another Graduate Psychology Program

Students who have completed a portion of another psychology program may apply to have credits transferred only after they have been admitted and enrolled.

Credit Recognition by Other Institutions

ADLER, and each of its faculties, make every effort to ensure that the various curricula and courses are current and in keeping with the highest standards of scholarship and pedagogy. However, students should be aware that the recognition of individual courses, certificates, or their degree by other post-secondary institutions or by regulatory bodies depends entirely on the policies of those institutions.

At the time of registration, students receive written notification of any credit transfer arrangements ADLER has made with other institutions, which includes information about such arrangements and contact information with respect to the receiving organization(s). If a student intends to apply to other institutions in the hope that ADLER courses or degrees will be accepted, they are advised to check in advance whether this will be the case.

All students are strongly encouraged to maintain their own files of Academic Calendars, course outlines, reading packets, practicum documents, grade sheets, papers, exams and other materials submitted to individual instructors or the School to support any future application for credit transfer recognition or to verify work/courses/training completed.
