Course Overview and Outline

Therapists will regularly find themselves in conversations with clients that are characterized by ambivalence, uncertainty, and low motivation. This is normal. Once referred to as “resistance,” therapists today must understand how they contribute to, or take away from, increased motivation with people at all stages of the change cycle. This course provides students with an effective toolkit that empowers them to apply powerful, evocative questions to create change and build a positive therapeutic relationship using coaching and a specific form of dialogue. Please note that oral and written fluency in English is required.

With the use of written lectures, videos, and professional practice exercises, students are engaged in this 18-hour online course where they learn how to work with clients who are ambivalent toward change.

Eligibility and Certification

To first enter or subsequently maintain a competent practice in mental health or human services, practitioners require ongoing professional education, as well as opportunities for supervised practice. The Faculty of Continuing Education at ADLER provides both.

ADLER’s Faculty of Continuing Education offers certificate programs that incorporate a case-based learning approach, encompassing theoretical discussion supported by real-life cases, scenarios, and role-playing. This approach affords participants the opportunity to experience the actual, day-to-day challenges encountered by most practitioners. Many of ADLER’s Continuing Education courses qualify for programs like the continuing education credit hours for the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association. Contact your organization to determine eligibility of a particular course.
