Course Overview and Outline
Over the course of their practice, therapists will experience regular clinical encounters with clients who are overwhelmed by their emotions. These overwhelming emotions often serve as a roadblock to deeper therapeutic work.
Many believe that in today’s market, clinicians and practitioners need at least 3 of the “big 5” modalities that are most used today (namely Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), Marriage and Family Systems Therapy, and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)).
DBT was developed to support those who struggle with suicidal behaviour, borderline personality disorder, emotion dysregulation, substance use, eating disorders, bipolar and other mood disorders. DBT is a comprehensive treatment modality comprised of 4 interconnected modes of intervention: individual therapy, skills training, coaching, and consultation teams. Throughout this course, students will examine the function of each of these modes and have opportunities to practice their growing skills in these areas through role playing and other group exercises. Students then apply their knowledge to case studies and/or real case examples.
Eligibility and Certification
ADLER’s Faculty of Continuing Education offers certificate programs that incorporate a case-based learning approach, encompassing theoretical discussion supported by real-life cases, scenarios, and role-playing. This approach affords participants the opportunity to experience the actual, day-to-day challenges encountered by most therapists.
Many ADLER Continuing Education courses qualify for programs like the continuing education credit hours for the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association. Contact your organization to determine eligibility of a particular course.
Note that this DBT course is only suitable for students with clinical backgrounds, who are trained and capable of managing clients who are, or can be, in crisis.
As the materials covered in this course teach students how to help clients achieve greater emotional stability, this course is intended for those who work in community and private practices with issues such as suicidality, self-harm, and various personality disorders. Upon completion and submission of all assignments, and following their review by the teaching team, students will receive a Certificate of Completion at the end of the course.
Disclaimer: Please note that completing this course does not qualify you to register with any regulatory body in Ontario (e.g. the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW), or the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO)). There is no formal accreditation process for DBT in Canada, however the successful completion of this course will satisfy most continuing education requirements. The entire process for certification can be found at http://www.dbt-lbc.org.
