Course Overview and Outline
In the last few years, we have seen a burgeoning number of mental health professionals deciding to venture out and create their own private practices. Clinical educations focus on clinical knowledge and skills, but as many of us find out the hard way, the skills related to being good clinicians are not the same as those related to being good business owners and operators. In order for one's practice to succeed, decisions and considerations need to be made with respect to one’s legal and financial set-up, the marketing and advertising of one’s practice, necessary professional regulations and compliances, and the overall development of the plan on which to model one’s business. These business skills are just as important as solid clinical skills, but rarely are they included in any typical educational programs.
In this course, students will learn about the necessary business steps required to develop a successful private practice. This course has been tailored to students who are trained in psychotherapy but still require guidance concerning the business-side of their career paths. Presented by a 40-year veteran practitioner and regulator, students will receive direction on how to start their practice from the ground up, insights on regulation and supervisory considerations, and a downloadable course-pack of private practice start-up tools.
Eligibility and Certification
ADLER’s Faculty of Continuing Education offers certificate programs that incorporate a case-based learning approach, encompassing theoretical discussion supported by real-life cases, scenarios, and role-playing. This approach affords participants the opportunity to experience the actual, day-to-day challenges encountered by most therapists.
Many ADLER Continuing Education courses qualify for programs like the continuing education credit hours for the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association. Contact your organization to determine eligibility of a particular course.
Note that this course is only suitable for students with clinical backgrounds, who are trained and capable of managing clients who are, or can be, in crisis.
Disclaimer: Please note that completing this course does not qualify you to register with any regulatory body in Ontario (e.g. the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW), or the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO)).
