AI-Generated Text and Material Policy
As an institution preparing professionals entering regulated professions, ADLER values high-level written communication skills. Artificial Intelligence text generators like ChatGPT, or Google Bard, or A.I. image generators produce interesting results but do not foster excellence in written communication and are not suitable for professional documentation in health care. As such the use of this kind of generator is prohibited for any assignment, test, paper, evaluation, report or other written work in any ADLER program. The school will make available to the faculty AI text detection programs should they have concerns. A student found to have used such a generator or similar technology for any work they have submitted will be subject to potential consequences equal to those listed in the plagiarism policy published in the Academic Calendar.
Audio-Visual Recording Policy
For the purposes of this policy, “recording” includes audio and/or video, transcript or photographic capture of learning activities (e.g., lecture, discussion, cases) by any electronic or digital means, either original or copied/shared. The right to access education for a student with an approved accommodation is permissible under the conditions listed in this policy. Accommodations are required by law in the Province of Ontario, as described in the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, 2005. Making recordings of learning activities at ADLER is prohibited unless a recording is part of an approved academic accommodation for a student. Permission for a recording, as part of an approved accommodation, cannot be unreasonably withheld by a faculty member or student, although the recording can be temporarily stopped if the information is being shared, which would be a violation of privacy legislation in Ontario. Recording of other events at ADLER (workshops, events, Convocation) is made under different policies but is not permitted to be made by students. The school, staff, and faculty have a legal obligation to protect the identity of any student with an approved accommodation for a disability. Identification of a student for whom a recording is being made is a breach of the Ontario Human Rights Code, school policy, and the Code of Conduct and may be subject to investigation and consequences as outlined in school policy. Students recording lectures, seminars, or other required academic activities without approved academic accommodations in place are in breach of school policies and the Code of Conduct and as such may be subject to the disciplinary provisions related to those policies. The recording must be done according to this policy.
- Students must be made aware of the possibility of recordings through the Academic Calendar and course syllabus.
- Faculty should inform students at the beginning of a class that:
- A recording is being made according to this policy
- That the recording is being made as an academic accommodation that is required by law in Ontario
- That the safeguards in this policy are in place
- Recordings should be made through an ADLER-owned account, either in Zoom or other recording technology.
- Recordings must be started, stopped, and managed by either faculty or staff of Adler Graduate Professional School. Faculty may stop a recording if personal information is being shared that is not relevant to the instructional content of a learning experience or would be contrary to privacy legislation in Ontario.
- In the case where a recording is being made in the Zoom platform, any student may be permitted to alter their display name and turn off their video regardless of the stated policy for that class. The faculty may require the student to turn on video for identification purposes before the recording begins until the recording is started.
- An approved student must have signed a “Non-disclosure of Recorded Materials for Academic Accommodation” agreement with the school within one year of the date of the recording date.
- No student may share, reproduce, post or otherwise make public, including to ADLER students, any recording made of any lecture, class, seminar or other academic activity. Even with the consent of those present, the recordings may only be used for the purposes of fulfilling the academic accommodation requirements of an approved student.
- Any recordings are safeguarded according to legislation in the province of Ontario.
- Recordings must be stored and accessed through ADLER platforms or ADLER-owned storage devices and must be removed within two weeks of the end of the class in which they are made.
Electronic Communication
Access to library resources on the Internet and to ADLER’s online education platform, ADLearn, is available to students enrolled in all programs. Before beginning their first course, students are required to have Internet access, word processing and printing capability, and a telephone at home or wherever they choose to complete their schoolwork. ADLER Intranet and Internet resources are intended to enable staff, faculty, and students to communicate exclusively to further educational and professional purposes. Any unlawful or unethical use of the School computer, audio-visual equipment, or other electronic resources will result in consequences up to and including dismissal and/or referral to a law enforcement agency.
